FAQ

Answers on U.S. eCommerce — from entry to multi-channel growth

Straight answers for brands building a U.S. eCommerce business — whether you're a U.S. brand scaling across Amazon, Walmart, and DTC, or an international brand entering the market for the first time.

What does MarketplaceMax do?

MarketplaceMax is the outsourced U.S. eCommerce team for brands. We run strategy, marketplaces (Amazon, Walmart, Target Plus), Shopify and DTC, operations, and performance marketing under one accountable partner — and we specialize in helping international brands enter and scale in the United States.

Who do you work with?

Two kinds of brands: U.S. companies that want one team to run and scale their eCommerce across channels, and international brands — European, Canadian, and manufacturers going direct — that need a U.S. team to launch and grow in the American market. We work with both; cross-border entry is a specialty, not our only focus.

We already sell in the U.S. — can you help us grow across channels?

Yes. Many of our clients are U.S. brands that want one accountable team to build and run a coherent multi-channel strategy — Amazon, Walmart, Target Plus, and their own Shopify or DTC store — instead of coordinating separate agencies. We own both strategy and execution across every channel, and run the advertising that scales it profitably.

Do I need a U.S. entity to sell on Amazon or Walmart as a foreign brand?

In most cases, yes. To get paid cleanly, enroll in Amazon Brand Registry as a trademark holder, and stay compliant, foreign brands typically set up a U.S. entity, EIN, and banking. We handle that setup as part of a market-entry engagement.

How is U.S. sales tax different from VAT?

The U.S. has no VAT and no national sales tax. Instead, each state sets its own rules, and selling enough into a state creates an obligation to register, collect, and remit — called economic nexus — even without a physical presence. It is an ongoing operational discipline across many jurisdictions, and we set up compliant collection and remittance.

Which marketplaces should my brand start with in the U.S.?

It depends on your category, margin, and goals. Amazon is where most U.S. product search begins and is usually the anchor; Walmart is often the highest-return second channel because it is less saturated; Target Plus is invitation-only and premium. We recommend sequencing deliberately rather than launching everywhere at once.

Do you manage marketplace advertising and retail media?

Yes. We run marketplace performance marketing as an ongoing optimization program — Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, and DSP across Amazon, Walmart Connect, and Target Plus, plus Google and Meta — measured against real margin, not vanity metrics.

How much does it cost to enter the U.S. market?

It varies with category, channels, compliance needs, and inventory. The larger costs are usually U.S. fulfillment, advertising, and inventory rather than our fees. We start with a strategy assessment that rebuilds your unit economics in dollars so you can see the real investment before committing inventory.

How long does a U.S. launch take?

A focused marketplace launch can go live in weeks once compliance, entity, and fulfillment are in place; a full multi-channel operation takes longer. The timeline is usually set by regulatory and operational readiness — category compliance, tax registration, and 3PL — not by the storefront itself.

Are you an agency or an outsourced team?

We operate as your outsourced U.S. eCommerce team, not a task-based agency. We take accountability for outcomes across the whole go-to-market — strategy plus hands-on execution — and can act as fractional U.S. leadership until you build the team in-house.

How do we get started?

Book a strategy assessment. We pressure-test the opportunity, map compliance and channels, and rebuild the economics — so you know exactly where you stand before you commit.
