TikTok Buy Direct Lets Your Brand Sell In-App Without TikTok Shop. Here Is the Test Plan Before You Call Your Rep.
TikTok announced two things on October 5: Buy Direct, a one-click in-app checkout from the For You feed, and a conversational Shopping Assistant. Buy Direct is the one that matters for DTC brands, because it reportedly lets you sell inside TikTok without joining TikTok Shop. Access is limited, so this is not a switch you flip today. It is a conversation to start with your TikTok rep this week, before Q4 budgets lock.
The recommendation
If TikTok is already a meaningful paid channel for you, ask your TikTok sales contact for Buy Direct test access now, and walk in with the questions below. Do not move budget until you have the fee, the data terms, and a holdout design in writing. If you are not spending on TikTok, this is not a reason to start in October. Your Q4 attention is better spent on checkout, discount hygiene, and marketplace inventory.
What is confirmed and what is not
TikTok’s own announcement describes Buy Direct as “a seamless in-app checkout solution that allows users to make purchases directly from a brand, without leaving TikTok,” with one-click purchase from the For You feed. TechCrunch and Adweek, both dated October 5, report that TikTok named Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe among the commerce and payment partners it built with, and that rollout to U.S. users and brands is beginning.
Several more specifics come from secondary coverage, not from TikTok’s announcement text I could read. Treat these as reported, and confirm with your rep:
- The brand stays merchant of record, so you handle payment, fulfillment, taxes, returns, and customer service.
- Buy Direct runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard led by Google, so your platform or payment partner needs a UCP integration.
- Access is eligibility-based and routed through TikTok sales reps. It is not self-serve.
- Salesforce reportedly expects its UCP-powered experiences to roll out in phases starting Q1 2027.
Not published as of today: fees, eligibility criteria, which Shopify plans or apps are required, how orders and customer data flow back to you, and any merchant results. Anyone quoting a conversion lift for Buy Direct is guessing.
The Shopping Assistant is a separate product. It answers questions on product details, shipping, sizing, and availability, and can help complete a purchase. One trade report says it appears on an advertiser’s product page in TikTok’s in-app browser. Its answers come from the information you supply, which is the real operator issue: a wrong shipping promise or stale size chart now gets repeated by an AI before the customer ever reaches you.
Why a DTC operator should care
TikTok Shop forces a trade. You get native checkout, but you accept TikTok’s marketplace rules, its fees, and its fulfillment requirements. Buy Direct, as reported, removes that trade for brands that qualify. You keep your own customer, your own pricing logic, and your own post-purchase flow, and you cut the click-out step where TikTok traffic traditionally leaks.
That leak is the whole case. Here is the illustrative math. These are not TikTok numbers, they are a template to rerun with your data:
- 100,000 TikTok landing sessions a month at a 1.2% site conversion rate = 1,200 orders.
- If one-click checkout lifts conversion by 20% relative (a hypothetical, no lift has been published), that is 1.44% and 1,440 orders. That is 240 extra orders.
- At a $60 AOV and a 35% contribution margin before ad cost, 240 orders is $14,400 revenue and $5,040 contribution a month.
- If the platform fee on Buy Direct orders is 8% of order value (placeholder, the real number is unpublished), that fee costs you $1,152 on those 240 orders, but also applies to any existing orders that migrate into Buy Direct. On all 1,440 orders it is $6,912. That is more than the $5,040 of new contribution.
The point of the template: the fee base matters more than the lift. If Buy Direct only touches incremental orders, it can pay. If it cannibalizes orders that would have checked out on your site at no platform fee, a modest lift can be a net loss. Get the fee and its scope in writing before you read any dashboard.
Questions to ask your TikTok rep
- What is the fee on a Buy Direct order, and does it apply only to in-app orders or to attributed site orders too?
- What are the eligibility criteria: spend level, category, platform, country of operation?
- Which Shopify setup do we need? Which app, which plan, which checkout version?
- What customer data do we receive: email, phone, marketing consent, shipping address? Is consent captured for email and SMS?
- Who owns refunds, chargebacks, and fraud losses on a Buy Direct order?
- How do orders appear in Shopify, and how will TikTok attribute them? Can we get order-level data to reconcile?
- How do Buy Direct orders interact with TikTok Shop offers, affiliate commissions, and creator links?
- Can we hold out a control group, and what is the minimum test length and spend?
- How does the Shopping Assistant get its product data, and can we review or correct what it says?
How to run the test
Do not judge this on TikTok’s reported conversions. TikTok and Shopify will both claim the same order. Run it like an incrementality test:
- Split by geo, audience, or time, and keep a control group on your normal landing page and checkout.
- Compare total orders, new customers, net revenue after refunds, and contribution after fees across both arms. Do not add TikTok-reported and Shopify-reported conversions together.
- Run at least two to three weeks of steady spend. Do not launch it into BFCM week, when everything else is moving.
- Decide the pass line in advance. Example: Buy Direct must beat control on contribution per $1,000 of ad spend, after fees, by at least 10%.
Fix this regardless of Buy Direct
The Shopping Assistant and any AI layer on top of your catalog are only as good as your data. This week:
- Audit shipping promises and cutoff dates against what you can actually ship in Q4.
- Make sure size charts, variant availability, and return policy text are current on the product pages TikTok traffic lands on.
- Check that TikTok pixel and Events API setup matches your Shopify events. Mismatched events make any test unreadable.
- Review your discount stack. One-click checkout shortens the path, and any code in circulation gets used faster. We covered the same risk in the Shopify WebMCP checkout piece.
What not to do
Do not rebuild your funnel around a feature without fees, terms, or a single published merchant result. Do not assume Buy Direct replaces TikTok Shop, since each has its own fee, data, and fulfillment tradeoffs. And do not let a rep’s “limited availability” rush you into a Q4 commitment you cannot measure.
